District A4 Effective Speaking
Once again it is time to announce the Effective Speaking Contest and request your support for this 2018 District and Multiple District project.
The District A4 contest will be held at Ecolé Secondaire Beatrice Déloges in Orleans on Saturday March 24, 2018. The event will be hosted by the Orleans Lions Club. Competitionse are held both in English and French. There is a Junior Category for grades 4, 5 and 6, an Intermediate Category for grades 7, 8 and 9 and a Senior category for students from grades 10, 11 and 12. For each of the 3 categories MD’A” finals are scheduled for May 4,5,&6, 2018 at the Holiday Inn in St. Catharine’s.
In the past all secondary and some primary schools were notified of this contest by a letter in English and French that provides the necessary details. The cost of these approximately 300 mailings was $400.00 and we received virtually no replies from the schools. This year we will try to attract students in other ways and we again request your support.
The contest information will be available on the A-4 website where an abridged version of the contest rules and regulations can also be found. Attached to this letter is an attractive colour poster which we ask you share with all your club members and ask them to print and distribute to friends and relatives as well post in local areas that would attract contestants such as stores, pharmacies, schools, churches, libraries, clubs, etc.
We will also initiate a social media program to attract contestants.
As soon as I receive enquiries from or about prospect contestants I will get in touch with the appropriate Lions Club and ask them to consider hosting the student. If you receive calls from local teachers, please take the time to consider hosting students from the school. In most cases, the teachers will select the top students in their respective classes and your Club’s involvement will be to encourage the schools to participate and to get the students to the District competition. Please feel free to contact schools in your area to encourage their participation.
Last year at the A4 Effective Speaking finals we had 20 Contestants compete in 5 categories. The winners of these 6 categories participated in the MD’A’ finals in St. Catharines, Ontario and earned 2 first and 1 second place prizes.
Last year 38 of our 63 clubs participated with donations totalling $6,170.00. These funds were spent on logistics for our A4 finals ie. snacks, room rental, postage, stationary, and student prizes. We also paid for student travel and expenses for the MD’A’ finals in St. Catharines, as well as a portion of the MD’A expenses to hold this event.
This year I am again requesting a voluntary contribution of $160.00 from each club in our district. $110.00 will go towards the District competition while $50.00 will be forwarded directly to the MD’A’ committee to assist with their significant expenses.
Please make all cheques payable to District A4 – Effective Speaking, and send the cheque directly to Cabinet Treasurer, Lion James Doyle, 18 Tulane Cres. Nepean, ON K2J 2H6
Please give the students in your area an opportunity to participate. Each year we have a terrific group of students participating at the District level, and the contestants at the Multiple District ‘A’ level are just that much more exciting to watch. District A4 can certainly be proud of the high quality of students we have sent to the competition, and we can be equally proud of the opportunity and experience we have given those students through support of this project.
